Role

Our top nuclear client is looking for a Mechanical Process Design Manager to join their team. The role is mainly remote with travel to Plymouth once a month.

Our Client has a requirement for a mechanical Process Design Manager, who will be required to work on a contract basis in a remote with occasional travel role.

Role Purpose:

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Process Design Manager to lead and manage the design and delivery of mechanical services and process systems within a highly regulated environment. The successful candidate will take ownership of design outputs and programme delivery for defined work packages, and manage a team of engineers to meet project objectives.

Job Role Responsibilities:

  • Lead mechanical process design activities for complex engineering projects, particularly in regulated environments such as nuclear
  • Oversee and coordinate a team of 5+ direct reports, ensuring quality and timely delivery of design outputs
  • Provide technical leadership and input on hydraulic and pressure system calculations
  • Conduct and support hazard identification and analysis (e.g., HAZID, HAZOP)
  • Manage the programme and deliverables associated with assigned design packages
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders and external regulators to ensure compliance with industry and safety standards
  • Maintain robust design documentation and ensure alignment with project specifications

Experience / Skills / Knowledge / Qualifications:

  • 8–10+ years of experience designing mechanical services/process systems.
  • Strong background in highly regulated industries, with a preference for the nuclear sector.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of hydraulic and pressure system design.
  • Practical experience with hazard identification techniques (e.g., HAZID, HAZOP).
  • Bachelor's degree (BEng/BSc) in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
  • Proven line management experience of at least 5 direct reports.
  • Track record of delivering design packages to time and budget.
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.

Desirable:

  • Understanding of IEC 61511 (Functional safety – Safety instrumented systems for the process industry sector)
